When the holiday season hits here in Florida, we aren’t in the midst of wintry weather like a lot of the country is, so we have to add in some other decor to make our homes look seasonal and festive. To get your landscape and other parts of your property’s exterior ready for the holidays, we have created some tips on doing just that.
If you live in Palmetto, Parrish, Bradenton, or nearby Florida areas, read on to see how you can transform your outdoor space for the holiday season.
Frame Your Front Door with Wreaths, Ribbons, & More
Adding a touch of the holidays to your front door is simple. You can choose a wreath with traditional Christmas colors or one that has other, bright colors for holidays such as Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. Another touch would be to add ribbons, particularly if you have steps leading up to your front door and a banister to fix the ribbons to. Also, consider putting some live evergreen trees in pots by the front door and wrapping those with holiday lights. All of these will create a warm, inviting spot for your guests as they enter your home.
Add Decorations to Your Outdoor Living Space
If you have an outdoor living space, this is a great area to spruce up and freshen with holiday decor. You can replace pillows on your patio furniture with holiday pillows or add in more ribbons and evergreen items, such as pine garland. You could also put up an outdoor tree in this area with items like bird feed that could attract area wildlife.
Celebrating Kwanzaa or Hanukkah? This is a perfect area for outdoor menorahs or kinaras where you can celebrate with the family while enjoying the great weather.
Adjust the Colors of Your Outdoor Lighting System & Put up Holiday Lighting
Many newer LED outdoor lighting systems are able to change colors. To increase the holiday spirit, change them to red or green, or blue and white. Newer LED systems are also more energy-efficient and won’t drive up your electric bill as the older lighting systems will.
Use holiday lighting to accent landscape shrubs and trees and place a festive spotlight on them for the season. The traditional clear lighting always looks elegant, or use colored lights for a fun touch. If you’re really feeling ambitious, we suggest picking some lights that change color or blink.
Add Some Poinsettias & Christmas Cactus to Your Landscape Beds
In our area of Florida, we have a climate that allows us to grow certain plants year-round, such as poinsettias and Christmas cactus. You can add these to your landscaping beds and they will bloom during the holiday season for a splash of festive color. Christmas cactus is best planted in shady areas, so keep that in mind when planning out where to plant it.
If you have pets, poinsettias can sometimes cause undesirable symptoms when eaten, so you may want to keep these planted where your pets can’t get to them.
